Quiet Contemplation

I  contemplate this time of year

in thought, both solemn and sincere

and as my advent candle burns

my soul to tender times returns.

Normality

I don't subscribe to "Christmas Rush",

excess and panic, lots of fuss.

My pace of life’s defined by walking,

making friends, reflecting, talking.

Hark! I hear the voices sing,
'tis Advent, time for carolling.

Walking, thinking, striding out,
I never cease to get about.

My normal mood is bright and jolly,

but lately I’ve felt melancholy!

It's Advent and it's time for thought

Autumn's Glow

Through autumn’s glow the sun shines bright

to fool us with a summer sight!

I'm Back

I’ve been “Off Air” for quite some time

but now I’m back with more in rhyme!

Walking

From my little cottage here
many walks are very near.

By riverside o'er hills and fields,
the beauty that this county yields.

Autumn Games

The game of conkers isn't sport,
just contest of a youthful sort.

Misty

A mist across my garden lay
heralding an Autumn day.

October

A day, a month or year or more.
What will October have in store?

Days

The year’s ninth month is slipping by,

one of sun and brighter sky,

although to end with sad frustration,

rain and flooding devastation.

Home

I love my Homeshire countryside

where I can wander far and wide.

Freedom

I see them soaring, hear their cry

and watch the birds with freedom fly.

Harvest

In springtime seeds and plants take root, 
in autumn nature yields its fruit.

Smiles

Remember, if you’re feeling down,

it’s easier to smile than frown!

Leaves

I see the trees grow broad and tall

then watch the leaves that gently fall.

Autumn

With shorter days and autumn near

warm words I’ll write to catch the ear.

Change

Late summer, autumn, seasons blending,

chill and morning mists ascending.

Birdsong less and colours vivid,

falling leaves, brown, golden, livid.

Celebration

This day for me is an occasion.

One for modest celebration

Words

Sesquipedalian is the word

which sounds more than a touch absurd.

Long words with phrases convoluted

to  florid language most well suited.

Thoughts

My rhymes are sometimes more poetic,

indicative of thoughts aesthetic.

Return to Autumn

Back from westward wandrings I

look sadly at the morning sky.

With shorter days and autumn near

more words I’ll write to warm and cheer.

Interlude

A few ‘soft’ days out west I’ll spend,

once home, more morning missives send.

Westward Ho!

Soon I’ll journey west once more

the Mayo coastline to explore.

Hills, lakes, earthworks prehistoric,

wildlife rare and lands bucolic.

Seasons

I’ve felt so many summer showers

and seen the ripening buds of flowers.

Quite soon autumnal suns will rise

on misty morns with watery skies.

Observation

A peaceful river flowed me by

reflecting cloudy summer sky.

Rain & Sun

Returning to my countryside
I’ve paced and ventured far an wide.

To feel the rain and catch the sun

whilst walking, is the greatest fun!

Change

I’ve been confined in city places

so now I’m craving open spaces.

With stars and birdsong as my guide

I’ll seek the open countryside.

Fond Fest' Farewell

To Edinburgh I’ve been before,

this time I stayed and saw much more

and not just fringe and concert halls

but famous sights and castle walls.

The Gallery I so admired

and Museum much inspired.

So I’ll end with this refrain,

“Ah will sure come back agin.”

Fringe and Fest

Edinburgh was such delight

I feel a constant need to write.

Late morning at Queens Hall unplanned

superb recitals, artists grand.

Then from sublime I had recourse

to seek some Fringe ridiculous!

Douglas Gibbs and Rob Castell

are two talents I know well.

Their Fringeland antics brought delight,

inspiring me their praise to write.

are entertainments to enjoy.

My trip to Edinburgh’s o’er 
leaving me requiring more –

of its wild frenetic pace

and fine events in every place.

Musicals and stand-up, dance,

to see so much I had the chance

which I seized as best I could

to watch the young, the great, the good!

Adventure North!

This afternoon I’m going north 

where, to The Fringe, I’ll sally forth.

Once there I’ll have the bestest treat;

for Barbershopera I’ve a seat!!

Micro-Walker

In my garden I found bugs

some butterflies a frog and slugs.

A sort of micro-walk I took

with magnifying glass and book,

and just like when I was a child

I listed all the creatures’ wild.

Post Gold Blues!

I fear a post-Olympic lull

where life may be a little dull

but pretty soon, I’m pretty sure

the “Para’s” will excite some more!

Something different

I’ve overdosed on much fine sport

so last night I diversion sought

and therefore walking gear discarded,

I "dressed to kill" and Promenaded!

Olympic success

I love to walk, to jog is fun

but not for me a Ten K run.

That said, the most amazing feat

is to be a fine athlete -

though not for medals or points scored,

to be there is the best reward.

Amid huge crowds I cheered and clapped

as tri-athletes ‘round lakeside lapped,

but that which so enchanted me

was the camaraderie!

Olympic fever I have caught 

having seen much cracking sport!

My Break

Mayo’s wild Atlantic coast

is where I walk and see the most.

Its rugged cliffs and broad terrain,

the strongest winds and softest rain.

To the opera I once more

went and tragic story saw -

of naïve love and arrogance

and duel to end a fine romance.

The opera is so much fun.

Last night I saw a funny one.

A treatise on mens vanity

and questionable sanity.

Something Different

The event, to my surprise

was in a field of massive size -

where, with a group, I 'circuit trained'

whilst luckily it never rained.

New active things I learnt to do  

using lots of muscles new!

To an event I’ve been invited

and fair to say, I’m quite excited!

Endurance

Braving summer’s storms I stride

out across my countryside.

Whatever element I face

I keep a steady Walker pace!

Art & Nature

Armed with paint tubes, palette, brush

I leave behind the morning’s rush.

Once I find a spot serene

I stop, prepare and paint the scene.

Ambulant Eating

Today, with blue skies for my roof

I shall go dining “on-the-hoof.”

Torchlight

Olympic torch went I to see 
which somewhat disappointed me.

An entourage of liveried wheels

but modest sign of toes and heels!

Waiting & Hoping

Unseasonal precipitation

has much curtailed my ambulation.

So by fireside sitting reading

wait I, in hope of clouds receding.

R&R

Train, bus, plane times I’ve been scanning 
and journey to the west been planning.

Sunday Saunter

Yesterday I northward tripped

and twinkle-toes in Isis dipped.

Then the ducks and duckings fed
with little chunks from loaves bread.

Because a good friend set the task -

Quantum Physics, I’ve decided

isn’t meant to be derided,

a photon in its contra state

observed, can with its twin equate.

I think it strange, if not absurd

that having used the "Football" word,

when commenting on England's show,

my hit-rate hit an all-time low!

So my crime is not repeated

Today I have three Blue Tit chicks 

clustered on a bunch of sticks.

Their mother in attendance too

doing best, what mothers do!

A mother wren with fledglings small

sat upon my garden wall.

With flutt’ring wings and open beaks

they asked for food with little squeaks!

My Music

When I travel west I spend 

time with my composer friend.

He’s many melodies created

and stories finely orchestrated.

I rise quite early every day
to think of things I’d like to say

and often it’s a nice surprise

to find that I’ve received replies!

as thinking comes quite easily -

To become a household name 

is my quite ambitious aim!

Sporting Prowess

When it comes to playing sport

I'm not the mad committed sort.

Sport I like to do at leisure

for recreation, fun and pleasure!

My Songbirds

In my garden I can hear

dawns fine chorus loud and clear.

First a solo, then duet

rising to at least octet.

So too, at the close of day

my songbirds once more have their way!

Clever rhyming perfect timing!

I have some quite important news

about a friend who writes reviews.

for clever rhymes and folks who sing!

Is this hate mail?!

One thing of which I’m not a fan,

are rhyming couplets that don’t scan.

Free verse is fine & prose is too

but couplets that don’t work, won’t do!

Inspiring times!

At times it can be somewhat tiring

coming up with rhymes inspiring,

but then I feel so glad I tried

because someone in rhyme’s replied!

Netiquette means manners, rules,
safety and protection tools.

Nasties, viruses and bugs
are bad unwanted cyber-thugs!
 
The Internet can be your buddy -
it helps you search, find, learn and study.
 
Don't give out "stuff" that shows off "Me",
that's what is meant by "privacy".
 
A password is both door and key
for access and security.
 
To search online's a skill that's taught
requiring patience, words and thought.
